Cripple Creek
bridge

Project Summary

Just outside Cripple Creek, Colorado on Highway 67 you will cross the highest bridge on the Colorado State Highway system. This steel plate girder bridge across Arequa Gulch was completed in 2001 as part of an $18 million highway realignment project. Thanks to rocky, mountainous terrain it was extremely difficult to provide crane pad locations and proper crane access for the project. Controlled detonations of portions of the mountain side allowed the use of two crawler cranes with a combined weight of 540 tons. We were tasked with completing a portion of our work inside the active CC&V gold mine, adding to the challenges — and excitement — of this project.
